January 2027 Astrology: Mars Goes Retrograde, Sun Moves into Aquarius
In January 2027, Mars goes retrograde in Virgo; Venus enters Sagittarius, Mercury and the Sun enter Aquarius. We've gathered the Capricorn New Moon, Leo Full Moon, and all the month's key dates in one calendar, Turkey Time.
January 2027 is a month when the fast planets change signs in the first weeks of the new year, and Mars changes direction in the middle. The year opens with the Sun and Mercury in Capricorn; on January 7, Venus enters Sagittarius and the same night the first New Moon of the year occurs in Capricorn. On January 10, Mars begins retrograde in Virgo. Mercury enters Aquarius on January 13, the Sun on January 20; and on January 22 there is a Full Moon in Leo. In this article, we explain all the important dates of the month in order, in Turkey Time (TSI). For the previous month's table, you can check the December 2026 astrology article.
General Sky Picture: The Year Opens in Capricorn
On January 1, the Sun is moving around the 10th degree of Capricorn. Mercury has been in Capricorn since December 25, and Venus is in the last degrees of Scorpio, where it re-entered on December 4. Mars is slowing down in Virgo, where it has been since November 26. Jupiter is in Leo, Uranus is retrograde in Gemini; Saturn and Neptune are in Aries, where they went direct in mid-December, and Pluto is moving direct in Aquarius.
The overall mood of the month is a transition between Capricorn's theme of planning and responsibility and Aquarius's theme of innovation and freedom. The first half of the month is more suitable for setting goals and building structure, while the second half is better for sharing ideas and making new connections. Mars's retrograde adds a note to this picture: "don't rush, review first."
January 7: Venus Enters Sagittarius
On January 7 at 11:53 AM (TSI), Venus moves from Scorpio into Sagittarius and stays there until February 3. After the intense, deep, and possessive tone in Scorpio, Venus in Sagittarius brings lightness, adventure, and honesty to relationships. Learning something new together, planning a trip, or giving each other more space in the relationship fits the spirit of this period.
On the shadow side, there is avoiding commitment, distancing when bored, and making promises that are hard to keep. You can find the general meaning of Venus in the chart in the Venus sign article.
January 7 Capricorn New Moon: The First Beginning of the Year
On the same day at 11:26 PM (TSI), a New Moon occurs in Capricorn; the Sun and Moon meet at 17°18' of Capricorn. This New Moon, which opens the first lunar cycle of 2027, is considered suitable for setting intentions for career, responsibility, long-term goals, and building solid foundations. It's a good time to write down your annual goals, put a plan on the calendar, or take on a responsibility you've been postponing.
The New Moon's alignment with Venus's entry into Sagittarius on the same day also reminds us to balance serious goals with the desire to enjoy life. For details of this New Moon, you can look at the January 7, 2027 Capricorn New Moon article.
January 10: Mars Goes Retrograde in Virgo
On January 10 at 3:58 PM (TSI), Mars stations at 10°26' of Virgo and begins retrograde motion. Mars goes retrograde about every two years; this time the retrograde will last until April 1, 2027. During this period, Mars will move backward, return to Leo on February 21, and go direct again at 20°56' of Leo on April 1.
Mars is the planet of energy, desire, courage, and taking action. During the retrograde period, this energy works more internally than externally: rather than starting new and big projects, it may be more efficient to finish unfinished business, review your methods, and postpone decisions made in anger. Since Mars in Virgo's topics are work order, daily routines, skills, and productivity, the retrograde is also an opportunity to reorganize work habits. For the entire journey of Mars in Virgo and the retrograde calendar, you can check the Mars in Virgo article.
January 13: Mercury Enters Aquarius
On January 13 at 9:06 AM (TSI), Mercury moves from Capricorn into Aquarius and stays there until February 1. The planned and realistic mental tone of Capricorn gives way to an original, innovative, and future-oriented tone. Mercury in Aquarius offers a suitable ground for brainstorming, technology-related work, community projects, and expressing unconventional ideas.
On the shadow side, there is stubbornly insisting on your ideas and staying too distant in emotional matters. Since Mercury will go retrograde in Pisces on February 9, you may want to finalize important correspondence and agreements in the second half of January. You can find Mercury's role in the chart in the Mercury sign article.
January 20: The Sun Enters Aquarius, Aquarius Season Begins
On January 20 at 10:29 AM (TSI), the Sun enters Aquarius; Aquarius season will last until February 19. Aquarius is a fixed air sign; freedom, friendship, community, innovation, and vision for the future are its domain. After Capricorn's question "how will I succeed?", Aquarius asks "for whom and why am I doing this, how can I do it differently?"
Aquarius season is a period suitable for teamwork, expanding social circles, and seeking unconventional solutions. We described the ended Capricorn season in the Sun in Capricorn article.
January 22 Leo Full Moon: Between Heart and Mind
On January 22 at 3:19 PM (TSI), a Full Moon occurs in Leo; the Moon stands opposite the Sun at 2°14' of Aquarius. The Leo-Aquarius axis brings up the balance between personal expression and community, the heart's desires and the mind's ideals. Making a creative project visible, taking the stage for something you love, or boldly expressing your feelings are among the themes of this Full Moon.
Jupiter also being retrograde in Leo supports processing these themes more internally, with the question "what do I really want to grow?" For details, you can check the January 22, 2027 Leo Full Moon article.
Throughout the Month: Jupiter and Uranus Retrograde, Saturn and Neptune Direct
Jupiter continues its retrograde that began on December 13, 2026, in Leo throughout January; it will go direct at 17°00' of Leo on April 13, 2027. A period of inward evaluation on growth, luck, and meaning continues; details in the Jupiter retrograde 2026-2027 article.
Uranus is also retrograde in Gemini and will go direct at 1°41' of Gemini on February 8; we explained the meaning of this retrograde in the Uranus retrograde 2026 article. Saturn and Neptune, on the other hand, are moving direct in Aries, where they went direct in mid-December. The sky is also supportive in January for structural work that has been suspended for a long time and for dreams to turn into concrete steps.
